Approaching the Interstellar Grain Organic Refractory Component

چکیده
Infrared spectra have been obtained for laboratory residues of photoprocessed low-temperature ices which have been exposed to long-term solar ultraviolet radiation on the EURECA satellite. This is an analog to the ultraviolet processing of interstellar dust mantles in diffuse clouds after leaving molecular clouds. The 3.4 mm absorption features of these organic materials match those of the diffuse cloud interstellar dust better than any other previously suggested analog to the interstellar organics. Subject headings: dust, extinction— infrared: ISM: lines and bands— ISM: individual (GC IRS 6E)

Making a comet nucleus
The chemical composition of a comet nucleus can be very strictly constrained by combining the latest results on: the core-mantle interstellar dustmodel, the solar systemabundances of the elements, the space observed composition of the dust of comet Halley, and the latest data on the volatile molecules of comet comae. The distribution of the components in the comet nucleus fall naturally into tw...
متن کاملGrain Destruction in Interstellar Shock Waves
Interstellar shock waves can erode and destroy grains present in the shocked gas, primarily as the result of sputtering and grain-grain collisions. Uncertainties in current estimates of sputtering yields are reviewed. Results are presented for the simple case of sputtering of fast grains being stopped in cold gas. An upper limit is derived for sputtering of refractory grains in C-type MHD shock...
متن کاملDust evolution, a global view: III. Core/mantle grains, organic nano-globules, comets and surface chemistry
Within the framework of The Heterogeneous dust Evolution Model for Interstellar Solids (THEMIS), this work explores the surface processes and chemistry relating to core/mantle interstellar and cometary grain structures and their influence on the nature of these fascinating particles. It appears that a realistic consideration of the nature and chemical reactivity of interstellar grain surfaces c...

متن کاملThe Source of Cosmic Rays: 3. Supernova Grain Composition
We show that the expected composition of cosmic rays accelerated from the erosion products of fast supernova grains in the hot interstellar medium (HISM) of ejecta enriched superbubbles, where the bulk ( 85%) of Galactic supernovae occur, is consistent with the currently available cosmic ray data. In particular, we show that if the cosmic ray metals come from the sputtering of fast refractory g...
